December 8, 2025
At approximately 7:30 p.m. on December 7, Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) Harbor Pilot Marcus Compton was navigating a cargo ship near Mosquito Point in Crown Bay Harbor, St. Thomas, when he spotted an overturned vessel. He quickly contacted the VIPA pilot boat, which was manned by Coxswain Angelo Freeman and Crewman Al Roberts Jr., to aid the capsized boat. Freeman and Roberts successfully rescued eight individuals from the water before picking up Harbor Pilot Compton.
The rescued passengers were taken to the excursion dock at the Austin “Babe” Monsanto Marine Terminal in Crown Bay. As per standard procedure following any rescue at sea, the pilot contacted 911 and the U.S. Coast Guard. The individuals appeared to be uninjured and were handed over to the Coast Guard for further assistance.
VIPA Executive Director Carlton Dowe expressed his sincere appreciation for the quick response and immediate action of Compton, Freeman, and Roberts, who played a crucial role in saving lives, as well as for the support from the agencies involved in this situation. Travelers are encouraged to stay safe during their journeys throughout the busy holiday season.
