What Documents Do You Need to Enter the
United States Virgin Islands?
The Virgin Islands Port Authority does not manage the entry or departure requirements for travelers to and from the United States Virgin Islands. Federal agencies of the United States government handle this responsibility. The following websites provide resources and contact information for the federal agencies responsible for overseeing entry to the airports and seaports of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES: U.S. citizens do not need a passport when entering the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the official U.S. Virgin Islands passport requirements, but you may be required to show proof of citizenship (raised-seal birth certificate and valid government-issued ID card such as a driver’s license) when departing the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. All persons departing from the U.S. Virgin Islands will be processed through U.S. Customs and TSA, including U.S. Citizens.
Even though you are not required to have a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you may want to take a passport versus needing two forms of identification to leave the U.S. Virgin Islands.
TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN: TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling within the United States. Contact your airline directly for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18.
TRAVELING WITH PETS: Each airline has its policy for traveling with pets. Contact your airline directly for more information.
REQUESTING SPECIAL SERVICES: To request assistance with boarding or disembarking an aircraft, contact your airline (i.e. for wheelchair assistance).
-
PERSONS THAT ARE NOT CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES: Citizens of countries other than the United States of America should follow U.S. travel regulations. Visit this site for more information.
-
REAL ID: On May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. Read more about REAL IDs on TSA's website https://www.dhs.gov/real-id.
