VIPA Updates Public Regarding Data Security Incident

Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) Executive Director Carlton Dowe provided an update on the data security incident that recently affected the agency. On January 29, 2021, VIPA experienced a security incident involving unauthorized access to its network. VIPA immediately took steps to secure its network, launched an investigation, and a cybersecurity firm was engaged to assist. The incident was also reported to local and federal law enforcement.

The investigation is in its initial stages and the Authority is working as quickly as possible to determine the scope of the incident and the impact on any information stored on the affected systems. Based upon the initial investigation there has been no loss of financial assets. VIPA is also unaware of any evidence indicating that employee or passenger data has been acquired or misused by an unauthorized actor as a result of this incident at this time. If this changes as the investigation unfolds, VIPA will take appropriate steps to notify individuals in accordance with applicable laws, if necessary.

Dowe said, “As we work to complete the investigation, VIPA will look for opportunities to further enhance our existing security measures. This is all the information we have to share until our investigation is complete, and we understand the full scope of the incident. We appreciate your patience as we work through this incident.”
