Image result for human resourcesThe Virgin Islands Port Authority's human resources department provides all human resources and employee support services for the Authority. These services involve recruitment, placement of new employees; orientation, training and career development; establishing and adjusting salaries, pay grades and pay scales; worker's compensation in the event of an on-the-job injury; employee counseling; and employee related programs and events.

This office also maintains physical and computerized records for all current and past employees of the Port Authority; prepares employment documents via our internal Notice of Personnel Actions (NOPA) system; coordinates medical, retirement and other employee benefits; and also provides employment verification.

Our human resources staff are tasked with carrying out the employment polices established by the Port Authority's Board of Directors, and to ensure that VIPA complies with all local and federal employment laws. The human resources director is an integral part of the negotiation of all employee union contracts negotiated by the Port Authority. Our human resources office is also involved in all activities related to labor relations include managing the grievance process at the various departmental levels, as well as grievances that require mediation and arbitration.

Benefits include medical and dental insurance coverage, optional eye care insurance, 20-25 paid local and federal government holidays, accrued vacation leave with a maximum of 480 hours each year and accrued unlimited sick leave; and a retirement system into which the employee becomes vested after 10 years of service (retirement is possible at age 50 or after 30 years of service regardless of age).

 

Internship Opportunities at the VI Port Authority

Our summer and internship program provides work experiences for students; supports organizations, including those that provide important community services; and recognizes that local circumstances, community needs and priorities vary widely.

University Internship
Regretfully, the VI Port Authority is not currently accepting applications from university students for internship.  Any future internship opportunities will be posted here.

Student Summer Internship Program
The VI Port  Authority provides summer employment for high school and college students for a six-week period during the summer.  Summer internship opportunities are posted here when available.

The VI Port Authority only accepts applications for open positions To apply for an advertised position at the Port Authority:

  • Visit our Web site's Job Listing section to download the job description of an advertised position you are interested in applying for.  Please read the job description carefully - paying close attention to the minimum requirements for application for that particular job.
  • If you meet the minimum qualifications, you may apply by downloading an employment application (PDF format).
  • Complete the application by typing or writing in legible, print handwriting. Applications must be submitted by mail or hand delivered to the Port Authority's Human Resources department.  You may also scan and e-mail your application to hr@viport.com.

Our office office is located in the Port Authority's Administration Building adjacent to the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas. On St Croix, the HR office is located at the Henry E.
