Welcome to the official Web site of the Virgin Islands Port Authority. The VI Port Authority (VIPA) is a semi-autonomous agency that owns and manages the two airports and the majority of the public seaports in the United States Virgin Islands - a territory of the United States of America. We are also charged with maintaining the harbors in the territory.  Our mandate is to promote the wise use of these facilities for the betterment of the U.S. Virgin Islands and its people, and to assist our government and our community in fostering and sustaining sound economic development.

Executive Staff

The VIPA management team is comprised of some of the most diverse, educated, innovative and hard-working individuals living in the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Led by former VI Legislature senator Carlton Dowe, who serves at the agency's executive director, the VIPA team keeps the wheels of the VIPA ship turning.

Governing Board of Directors

The VI Port Authority is governed by a nine-member board of directors.  The board is comprised of four government commissioners who serve at the pleasure of the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and five private citizens who are selected by the governor and appointed by the VI Legislature.  The board meets once a month and all board meetings are open to the public.

 

Our History

The story of the U.S. Virgin Islands is a diverse and interesting tale which includes ownership by several different countries throughout history, and eventually a purchase by the United States of America who own the islands today.  The management of the ports have switched hands from pirates, to various governments, the U.S. military and now in the capable control of the VI Port Authority.
